Skin Graft Surgery Journal

(6/27/2007)

August 8

I just realized that we never gave a follow-up report on Corbin's surgery...Sorry!!  Corbin is doing really well.  His skin is healing and the flap the surgeon placed over Corbin's rod looks great!  Every day the skin graft looks better and better.  We are back to full baths and swimming in the pool.  (Perfect timing since the rain is just now letting up!)  We are scheduled for a final appointment with the plastic surgeon in October just to check over everything.  Dr. Wang (plastic surgeon) did gave us clearance for an expansion whenever Corbin's VEPTR  Drs are ready.  We are so, so thankful that this surgery was such a success!  We will post the date of Corbin's first expansion once it is scheduled.

July 4

Corbin was able to have his wound vac removed yesterday and the Dr. let us come home.  Yeah!  The surgeon thought that everything looked good but he wants us to keep Corbin as inactive as possible for the next week.  This is quite a task, but we are doing what we can.  We were so glad to be back home for the July 4th celebrations!  Corbin even got to enjoy his first Belton parade!  Sorry for not updating better this time but we didn't have internet in San Antonio.  We appreciate you thinking about us!  Now...picture time...

Corbin is doing good.  He still has all of his drains/tubes in, but the surgeon said today that hopefully they can come out tomorrow.  Unfortunately, he hasn't liked the not being able to stand up and move around!  We kind of see this as a good thing!

Corbin had his surgery this morning.  Everything went well and he was able to get to his room late this afternoon.  He has slept pretty much all day.  He can only lay on his right side and on his stomach for the next few days.  This is going to be a fun challenge.  The great thing is that his anesthesiologist was able to get an IV in his foot again and avoid using his right hand which has his sucking thumb on it!  I came back to Temple for work tomorrow.  We are hoping that Holly and Corbin get to come home early next week.  He has a drain from one site and a wound vac on another that need to stay there for the next few days.

We were called today and they want us to come in for the surgery in the morning.  So we are getting ready to head back to San Antonio.  We are scheduled to go to the OR at around 10-ish, so hopefully we will be done before lunch.    And then back home before the 4th of July!

I'm sorry I'm posting this so late in the day.  We arrived at the hospital this morning at 6:30, checked in, and made it to the pre-op room.  However, after evaluating Corbin, the anesthesiologist decided his lungs didn't sound clear enough for surgery.  Corbin had a cold a couple of weeks ago and although he is better, the cough has lingered.  She decided to send him home with some medicine and we are set to try again on Friday.  We are thankful that she is on the cautious side and look forward to getting this taken care of on Friday.

Well, we went back to San Antonio yesterday because one section of the rod has started showing through Corbin's skin.  It hasn't poked through yet, but it is really, really close.  We met with the orthopedists as well as a plastic surgeon to figure out what to do next.  The plastic surgeon is going to try to move some tissue/skin from Corbin's upper thigh to his back using a skin flap to help cover the rod.  We are set to go into surgery Monday morning at Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio.  If things go well, the surgery should only take about 2 hours and we will hopefully be out of the hospital in 4-5 days.  We are hopeful this will help and Corbin will be able to keep the rod in his back.

Please keep us in your prayers as we start this next process.  We will update the website as much as possible, but we are at a different hospital this time, so we will do what we can.  Thanks again for keeping up with our little boy!
